Picture: Bay Bridge
I am a fan of the art of photography: taking and editing pictures to create a photo that captures emotion, feeling, and experience. Taken by my dad, I did a little photo shop work of his picture capturing the Bay Bridge from Alcatraz island. I like the aesthetics of faded antique pictures and thought I'd do some experimenting with it, so this is the outcome of my minimal photo shop skills.

Ginger Leigh: And the Hallucinations...
Pandemonium: The only word that can describe the militant battle between the culturally crossed sounds and aesthetic ambience Ginger Leigh's latest album, And the Hallucinations constructs. From the influences of American music to the sitars and string arrangements of the Middle Eastern countries; confusion, ideology, and entropy mark Ginger’s belief about the eternal antipodal difference between the Eastern and Western cultures.
The greatness of the album comes from Ginger’s ability to tell a story about the journey of a person finding the true meaning of war through obscene fracas instead of using words. It is a dream; a hallucination. The opening number, "al-Ironman," is an attempted warning that suggests that the cultural conflict is so large, only a superhero like Ironman can resolve it. "Heaven's Eye" is beautifully disturbing in which it escapades from loud sirens to the sounds of a hopeful ending to the war. The Psychedelic songs like “Get It Right!” and “A Song For Two Marionettes,” are salutes to the many who protest wars. Much like during the 60s when the Vietnam War was remonstrated by hippies, the two songs provide nothing but realism to the story: We are human, thus our world is not perfect, but let’s make it goddamn it! Another hallucination is told in “The Cripple and the Mime.” The dream is taken to a carnival when suddenly, a loud bang erupts the festivities only to elude a terrorist attack has taken place.
Whether one views this album as disastrously annoying or a phenomenal masterpiece, Ginger’s understanding of how to artistically illustrate an anarchic cultural clash through noise is flawless. Even though little is known about Ginger Leigh and why he creates songs of calamity depicted through various electronic sounds, after listening to And the Hallucinations, it is clear that his primary objective was not to write an album of popularity, but to solemnly diagnose a demented album that confronts a jumbled political thought.

Beach House: Interview and Performance
I like Beach House not because Indie college satellite radio stations play their music, but because I am naturally drawn to down beat, relaxing tunes (i.e. Marjorie Fari, Beirut, Belle & Sebastian). Their music is haunting, yet pleasurable to listen to - minimal, yet satisfyingly tasteful. I am a fan of artists who can perform their songs well live, especially in small venues and a while back, Beach House performed three songs in Juan’s basement for a Pitchfork.tv exclusive. They sound pretty good, maybe even better than the album recording. Check them out and see what I mean…Part 1: Gila
Part 2: Holy Dances
Part 3: Apple Orchard

Beirut: The Flying Club Cup
Zach Condon and his gang of multi-talented musicians have been around for quite some time writing songs infused with elements of Eastern European and folk sounds. And now, almost one year into their second full-length release entitled The Flying Club Cup, the Santa Fe, New Mexico natives have spoiled us with a pleasant live DVD of the band playing every song from the album in various apartment buildings, stairwells and at parks around Brooklyn, New York. I’d have to say, even though it is simple and minimal in many ways, the idea that the friendly guys at La Blogotheque came up with is both charming and mesmerizing. Anyway, enough of that – Check out the band, their music and their DVD. I really enjoy listening to them and I hope you find the same pleasure as I do.
